How the Party started
lAILA M. HUSSEIN

Music that is primarily produced electronically or through electronic devices and instruments has been constantly evolving ever since the demolition of rock from music to dance to to music to listen to in the 1950s (Figure 1) up until today. Electronic dance music, which is self explanatory, contains more than 160 sub-genres (Schinas, 2018), all influencing one another through time. Some sub-genres are bigger, or less specific, that would be divided further into smaller categories. Such genres include Techno and House music would usually have specific sounds that are used differently in the sub-genre, creating a whole new one, such as Hardcore Techno and Progressive House (Figure 1) Some sub-genres are combined together successfully, creating a mix of both genres, such as Tech house and Dubstep.

BPM, or beats per minute, makes a distinct difference between different styles embedded into the genres themselves. Logically, the higher the BPM, the faster the tempo is. Some people prefer fast music, such as Industrial, others like slower and calmer music, such as Minimal. The titles explain the sounds used in the genre/sub-genre. Industrial music sounds like factory/march noise with a strong base and typically high BPM. Minimal is characterized by minimal sounds and slower tempo. Examples of different types of sub-genres can be found in the Music page.

I picked this topic since this type of music has been getting increasingly popular, especially in Egypt. This music is being played in restaurants, coffee shops, stores, and even taxis and cars and people have been barely noticing this shift in the public taste in music. More and more Egyptian DJs and producers are slowly making their way into the international scene. More parties are taking place here, whether that be under the radar or vice versa. The new generations are adopting this music, along with other genres like Trap music and Jazz. Since Egypt is going through somewhat of an evolutionary movement in music and EDM in general is a big part of the local and international movement, I thought a straight forward guide from beginning to end would be useful, informative, and entertaining. It is a topic I am personally interested in and my aim was to introduce the whole experience with the background information sufficient enough to let the reader into the party from the beginning till the present day, and I certainly hope this serves the purposes.
